Scottsdale Dentist: Tooth Gems

Tooth gems are making a comeback as a trendy, blingy way to accessorize your smile. Originally a trend from Sweden, the United States are obsessed with it currently, with lots of celebrities backing the smile bedazzle. A tooth gem can last upwards of a year and can either be removed naturally with time or by your dentist.

Though these gems are eye-catching, they may come at a significantly higher cost than the little gem is actually worth. If your gem lasts a long time, your tooth may be at risk for needing treatment after it falls off! One story spread across media is a woman who’s gem lasted 5 years, leaving a whole in her tooth, resulting in her tooth needing a crown. Yes, she upgraded from a gem to a crown…..but her tooth was left worse than before the gem!

We recommend that if you get tooth gems, make sure to clean in the area you got it. It is important to clean around the gem to help reduce the amount of bacteria that invades underneath it. When you go for cleanings or checkups at your Scottsdale dentist, make sure to ask about your gem’s condition, as well as your tooth that is housing it!

Scottsdale Dentist: Best Botox – At a Dental Office?

Usually, patients inquiring about Botox, Juvaderm, or other injectables search for plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and medical spas for treatment. However, did you know that your Scottsdale dentist is qualified to give you your injectables treatment? Dentists study to become facial experts – they are required to have extensive knowledge in not only teeth, but facial bones, nerves, muscles, and anatomy.

In situations where nurses, physician assistants, medical estheticians, and internists administer injectables, they most likely received their training on the job and did not train in facial anatomy, physiology, pharmacology of the products, and adverse affects – according to the American Academy of Facial Esthetics. In fact, they posted an article titled, “DENTIST’S DOING BOTOX? IT’S ABOUT TIME!”

So what are injectables? Commonly, when you hear this word, you think of Botox and Juvederm – the two most common injectables there is. Men and women can both benefit from injectables!

Botox (botulinum toxin) is a purified protein that when injected into the facial muscles, blocks the contraction. This doesn’t affect your facial muscles, but rather the transmitters that trigger contraction, that stops the “wrinkle making” movements you experience without Botox. For a typical patient, Botox lasts approximately 3-4 months, however, depending on your physiology and activity, longevity varies.

Botox has several advantages, including:

  • smoothing wrinkles on the forehead
  • smoothing wrinkles between the eyes and around the corners of eyes
  • smoothing wrinkles around the lips
  • complimenting dental treatments like dentures, lip augmentation
  • retraining facial muscles during orthodontic treatments
  • TMJ relief
  • Facial pain relief
  • Migraine relief

Dermal fillers, such as Juvederm, volumize creases and folds in the face. With age, our collagen (made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar) slowly diminishes, which gives us an aged appearance. Juvederm and other dermal fillers available restore the hyaluronic acid. Being injected right underneath the creases and folds, there is instant volume in areas that lacked it before.

Juvederm can be used for:

  • high lip lines
  • volumizing/augmenting the lips
  • adjusting asymmetry of the lips
  • volumizing/plumping the cheeks
  • restoring parentheses lines (lines from your nose to your lips, like in the photo)
