You may have heard of “oil pulling” as a natural, effective way to cleanse your mouth. Oil pulling can be practiced with sesame, olive, sunflower, or coconut oil. Unlike a quick rinse with traditional mouthwash, it is recommended to swish oil for at least twenty minutes. In theory, the oil “pulls” harmful bacteria and toxins from the body, trapping them into the oil.
In later ages, the Indian culture practiced oil pulling, treating at least 30 systemic diseases. Claims have also been made that oil pulling also reduced halitosis (bad breath), and whitens the teeth. However, there are limited research studies to provide evidence for this.
There may be value to oil pulling, however, your Scottsdale dentist recommends that in addition to oil pulling, you still maintain brushing 2x a day and flossing.
